Jeffrey J. Runge DVM, DACVS

Dr. Jeffrey J. Runge is a lecturer of small animal surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons specializing in companion animal and exotic surgery. He focuses primarily on laparoscopic and thoracoscopic minimally invasive surgery, and has lectured on single port and multiport laparoscopic surgery alike.
Through ongoing collaboration with leading human laparoscopic surgeons, Dr. Runge and the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine have become one of the leaders in veterinary reduced port surgery. By utilizing newer human laparoscopic single site techniques such as Single Port Access (SPA), Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), and Laparoendoscopic Single-Site Surgery (LESS), Dr. Runge’s group continues to minimize minimally invasive surgery for today’s companion animals. Dr. Runge is an active member the veterinary endoscopy society, as well as three human laparoscopic surgical societies, SAGES (Society of Gasterointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and the RPSG (Reduced Port Surgical Group), and IPEG (International Pediatric Endosurgery Group).
Dr. Runge graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle PA, and then received his DVM from Ross University. Following his internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York, Dr. Runge went on to do his surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania, which included a one year fellowship and a three year small animal surgical residency.
His current research interests include applying Laparoendoscopic Single Site surgery (LESS) and Single Port Access (SPA) techniques in small animals as well as comprehensive simulation based laparoscopic skill training.
